DIRTY PROJECTORS BITTE ORCA CD The follow-up to 2007's critically acclaimed and Domino debut "Rise Above". Their fifth release is a big rock album by design. Its idiosyncratic and sincere take on popular music is reminiscent of David Byrne with whom Dirty Projectors collaborated on "Knotty Pine" for the 2009 compilation "Dark Was The Night". In many ways, group leader David Longstreth could be seen as this generation's answer to Byrne, a distinctive torchbearer of labyrinthine song arrangements that go down easy.

JAMES BLACKSHAW THE GLASS BEAD GAME CD Utter brilliance from British 12-string guitar virtuoso James Blackshaw on his debut for Michael Gira's YOUNG GOD imprint. Blackshaw combines the sounds of traditional folk with minimalist classical composition to create a fresh and exciting take on folk music. Comparisions can be made to John Fahey and Jack Rose jamming with Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Philip Glass and you are getting the idea. One of the better releases we have heard this year! Open your ears to healing sounds of Mr. James Blackshaw. |
AMESEOURS AMESEOURS CD When I first read about Neige of Peste Noire and Alcest having a new project combining black metal, post-punk and new wave, I was more than skeptical. How could this work? Well, to my surprise it works rather well. Neige passes off the clean vocals to Audrey Silvain and focuses on black metal shrieks. The more I absorb this release the more I enjoy it. Tracks range from french new wave influenced pop (think Alcest with some synth and female vocals) to brutal, melancholic black metal epics. Not recommended for close-minded metalheads! One of the best releases of this year. Decibel gave it a 9! |
BLANK DOGS UNDER & UNDER CD Brooklyn's BLANK DOGS graces us with his (yes, there's just one Blank Dog) second proper full length Under and Under. Although, the mysterious BLANK DOGS have released countless 12" eps, and 7" eps in limited runs on various smoking hot labels, WOODSIST, SACRED BONES & his own label CAPTURED TRACKS, Under and Under sees release on garage rock label IN THE RED. The sounds on Under and Under could be easily compared to synth-punk/new wave post-punk, not unlike FAST FORWARD and the early 2000's offerings from west coast label GSL. Of course, there are plenty of references to JOY DIVISION, THE CURE AND BAUHAUS, but in a lo-fi, garage/bedroom-psych kind of way. "Setting Fire to Your House" is the jam! Don't sleep on this! |

DEASTRO MOONDAGGER CD/LP+CD (Release Date 06/02/09) GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL
When Randolph Chabot, the 22-year-old auteur behind Deastro, is asked about the title of his new album, he recounts a dream about a prince, a kingdom, an evil King of Darkness, and a search for the mythical “Moondagger,” the bearer of which wields ultimate power. And while Moondagger, Deastro’s astonishing new album, does contain traces of that dream--in all of its bittersweet, fantasy-novel glory--the record itself is infinitely more down-to-earth, containing the sort of unrelentingly earnest, inspirational pop music that could only come from a kid weaned on fiction but living desperately, joyously in the here-and-now. Moondagger expands upon the positive electro-pop of Keepers--Deastro’s home-recorded opus from 2008--with the addition of a full band. Thankfully, the mercurial, prolific Chabot still seems blissfully unaware of his music’s genreless-ness. Thick, atmospheric production obscures bright, starry-eyed melodies; ecstatic synth squiggles dance around new-wave beats on songs about Nordics, toxic crusaders, and geometric shapes; arrangement ideas bounce off one another within ambitious song structures that swerve left, then right, then left again. And yet underneath all of their seeming irreverence, Deastro’s songs are breathtakingly down-to-earth--melodic slices of synth-led experimental pop whose energy builds with each iteration of the chorus, hitting emotional peak after emotional peak until they collapse in a heap..

J DILLA JAY GOT PAID CD(Release: 06/02/09) NATURE SOUNDS
Jay Stay Paid is a 25 track collection of unreleased Dilla beats mixed and arranged by Pete Rock. While mostly instrumental, "J$P" also offers a few guest vocals from artists that Dilla worked with or admired including Black Thought (The Roots), DOOM, M.O.P., Blu and more. Executive produced by Dilla's mom Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey. Musical supervisor, Pete Rock: "This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old disks & DATs. It's mind blowing...this is like the missing links to Dilla's legacy."
